Manufacturing Machines and CNC Machines

Process engineering does not end with technology preparation. To transform a technical design and engineering documentation into a finished product, the right manufacturing machines and production equipment are essential.

The choice of machine depends on several factors, including the type of material, component geometry, required accuracy, production volume and the manufacturing process being used.

Modern manufacturing processes use a wide range of CNC machines, machining centres, sheet metal processing machines, EDM machines and industrial robots.

CNC Milling Machines

CNC milling machines and machining centres are used to manufacture components with different levels of complexity.

Depending on the machine configuration, this may include:

  • 3-axis CNC machining centres,
  • 4-axis CNC machines,
  • 5-axis machining centres,
  • multi-axis CNC machines,
  • vertical machining centres,
  • horizontal machining centres.

Multi-axis machines allow complex components to be manufactured more efficiently and can reduce the number of setups required during production.

CNC Turning Machines

CNC lathes and turning centres are primarily used for machining rotational components.

Depending on production requirements, the equipment may include:

  • CNC lathes,
  • CNC turning centres,
  • mill-turn machines,
  • CNC turning centres with driven tools,
  • multi-axis turning machines.

Combining turning and milling operations in a single machine can reduce the need to transfer components between different production machines.

Sheet Metal Processing Machines

Specialized machines are used for sheet metal cutting, punching and bending.

These include:

  • laser cutting machines,
  • CNC punching machines,
  • press brakes,
  • plasma cutting machines,
  • waterjet cutting machines.

Selecting the right machine allows the manufacturing process to be adapted to the material type, sheet thickness, required accuracy and production volume.

EDM Machines

EDM machines – Electrical Discharge Machining machines – are used to manufacture precision components using controlled electrical discharges.

The main types include:

  • wire EDM machines,
  • sinker EDM machines,
  • EDM drilling machines.

EDM technology is commonly used for the production of moulds, dies, tools and components with complex geometries or demanding precision requirements.

Industrial Robots

Modern manufacturing facilities increasingly rely on industrial robots to automate production processes and improve efficiency.

Industrial robots can be used for:

  • machining,
  • material handling,
  • welding,
  • cutting,
  • machine loading and unloading,
  • palletizing,
  • assembly,
  • automated production processes.

Depending on the application, manufacturing systems may use six-axis industrial robots, collaborative robots and automated robotic production cells.

Machines for Different Manufacturing Processes

There is no single universal machine suitable for every manufacturing process. The appropriate solution depends on the requirements of the individual component and the complete production process.

When selecting manufacturing equipment, factors such as the following should be considered:

  • machine type,
  • number of axes,
  • working envelope,
  • kinematic capabilities,
  • CNC control system,
  • available tooling,
  • workholding and fixturing,
  • required tolerances,
  • workpiece material,
  • production volume and repeatability.

The correct combination of machine, manufacturing technology, tooling and process planning makes it possible to achieve the required quality, productivity and production repeatability.

Manufacturing Equipment and Process Engineering

The machine is only one element of a complete manufacturing system. Effective process engineering connects the capabilities of the machine with the requirements of the product and the production process.

Understanding the capabilities and limitations of different CNC machines and manufacturing equipment makes it possible to select the most appropriate production method, optimize machine utilization and develop efficient manufacturing processes.
